Virtual fencing technology to intensively graze lactating dairy cattle. I: Technology efficacy and pasture utilization

چکیده
Virtual fencing is promoted as the next advancement for rotational grazing systems. This experiment compared capacity of conventional temporary electric versus virtual to contain a herd 30 lactating dairy cows within boundaries their daily pasture allocation (inclusion zone). Cows were moved each day new rectangular paddock that was divided crosswise into an inclusion and exclusion zone by single linear (first 10 d) or (second front-fence. A 3-d fence training period separated 2 treatments. fences imposed using pre-commercial prototype eShepherd system (Agersens Pty Ltd.). Neckband-mounted devices replaced visual cue with benign audio cues, which if ignored accompanied aversive electrical stimulus. learned respond cues avoid receiving stimuli, ratio signals individual averaging (± standard deviation) 0.18 ± 0.27 over d deployment. Unlike fence, did not fully eliminate cow entry zone, but generally contained ?99% time. Pasture depletion reduced efficacy in preventing from entering magnitude this effect insignificant practical terms (i.e., increased time spent ?28 s/h per cow). highlights potential control movement even when availability limited 1 kg dry matter/cow above target residual 1,500 matter/ha), requires confirmation under longer more complex applications. Within treatment period, uniform utilization (% consumed matter/ha) zones indicates near front-fences. Overall, study demonstrated successful simple application allocation.

Lighting can be better integrated to the architectural design process through computational tools that are capable enough to visualize and analyze the luminous environment accurately. This paper describes an image-based lighting analysis procedure that operates with high dynamic range lighting data for evaluating architectural spaces. The discussions mainly refer to visual and metrological aspe...
متن کاملFeeding Lactating Dairy Cows Proteins Resistant to Ruminal Degradation I
Sixty multiprious Holstein cows were fed treatment diets from 11 to 40 d postpartum with corn silage as the forage. Treatment diets each contained a different supplemental protein: 1) solvent soybean meal; 2) extruded soy product; 3) combination of corn gluten meal and distillers dried grains with solubles; and 4) a combination of protein sources from diets 2 and 3. Covariate adjusted means for...

Four multiparous Holstein cows in midlactation were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square to evaluate whether source of forage influenced salivary secretion during eating in lactating dairy cows. The forages were allocated separately from the pelleted concentrates. Cows were offered 1 of 4 forages each period: barley silage, alfalfa silage, long-stemmed alfalfa hay, or chopped barley straw. Saliva secre...
متن کاملInvestigation into the seasonal salmonellosis in lactating dairy cattle.
Sporadic salmonellosis has been reported in mature lactating dairy cattle in the southwestern United States and is an intriguing problem in that Salmonella can be cultured from faecal samples of these cattle throughout the year. However, it is pathogenic only during late summer/early autumn and in certain years. We sampled apparently healthy (n=10) and diarrhoeic (n=10) cattle during an outbrea...
